Consumer Reports takes a look at the benefits of shipping luggage instead of checking. They concluded that you’ll avoid the hassle of checking bags at the airport—and may even save some money:
Newer entrants are bringing prices down, notably Lugless…its basic service uses an algorithm to find discounts with FedEx and UPS; you take your luggage to a local drop-off point (you can also arrange for it to be picked up). If you’re at least five days from departure, and have a modest amount of gear, you may be able to beat the airlines on price. For example, shipping two bags from Houston to Milwaukee costs $37.99, or $18.99 per bag.
