Summer in the city? Sure… but only if it’s Chicago!
The Windy City is an exciting destination any time of the year, but it truly shines under the summer sun.
Enjoy the bustling city life and famous attractions such as the Shedd Aquarium, Willis Tower with its stunning skyline views, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Millenium Park (home of the famous “bean” sculpture”) offers free concerts throughout the summer, as well as public art installations.
When you’re done with city life, head to the lakefront, a Chicago summer icon offering public beaches, parks, and recreational opportunities. Its 18-mile Lakefront Trail is the perfect place to bike, jog, or take a leisurely stroll.
Pro Tip: Plan your trip while the Cubs are in town!
-
Glacier National Park, MT
If you guys are feeling adventurous this summer, then this one’s for you!
Located in the Rocky Mountains, Glacier National Park is a summertime paradise, with dramatic landscapes and abundant wildlife.
Summer trips are especially beautiful here—from late June to early August, the park bursts into vibrant color as wildflowers bloom.
Bring your sturdiest shoes and enjoy over 700 miles of walking/hiking trails with breathtaking views of winding lakes, mountains, and jaw-dropping glaciers.
The pleasant summer weather is perfect for enjoying the park’s water-based activities, such as boating, kayaking, paddleboarding, and fishing. Or give in to your more adventurous side with a thrill-filled whitewater rafting trip along the Flathead River.
Pro Tip: Take a guided hike—going off the beaten path—for a fascinating intro to glaciology.
-
Maui, HI
Maui’s uniquely Hawaiian blend of relaxation and aquatic adventures makes it an ideal summer escape.
The beaches, some of the most beautiful in the world, are the island’s greatest draw. Whether you’d rather surf, swim, or simply sunbathe, there’s a spot for you.
The clear, warm waters that surround the island are teeming with marine life. Snorkel in the shallows or book one of the popular excursions to check out the colorful coral reefs, tropical fish, and sea turtles.
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, indulge your foodie side at one of Maui’s iconic food trucks. Specialties include fresh fish tacos, shaved ice, just-picked tropical fruit, and tasty Maui-grown coffee.
Pro Tip: Book a reservation to watch the sunrise at Haleakalā, a dormant volcano 10,000 feet above sea level with the most amazing panoramic views.
-
San Diego, CA
Another one of our favorite summer trips takes place in sunny San Diego, a California city well-known for its optimal surf spots.
The perennially warm, sunny weather and casual SoCal vibe make the beaches an excellent summer spot for swimming, sunbathing, and strolling along the lively boardwalk. Surf newbies will find plenty of locals offering surf lessons. A quick morning class, and you’ll be riding the waves by noon!
Off the beaches, check out Balboa Park, home to museums, gardens, art exhibits, and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. After sunset, visit the Gaslamp Quarter, known for its delicious restaurants, trendy bars, and vibrant nightlife.
Pro Tip: Go snorkeling at La Jolla Cove for serene marine encounters—and the occasional leopard shark.
